Rapid Change, Rapid Challenge
Addressing the Challenges of Response in an Ever-Changing Environment
Location: Cary and Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA

The Fellows of North Carolina hosted a conference to coincide with the Northeast Asia Regional Program last month. More than 100 Fellows and friends from ten countries gathered at the Umstead Hotel in Cary, North Carolina, where the conference kicked off with a welcome from N.C. Secretary of Commerce Keith Crisco. The panels on healthcare, workforce development and media, moderated by Tom Frawley, '89, Northern Ireland, Tony Habit, '00, USA and President of Southeast Strategies Neal Rhoades respectively, engaged the audience in conversations about the ways in which these three fields are addressing the rapidly changing social, political and economic landscapes. The panels were followed by a keynote address by U.S. Congressman David Price (D – NC) over lunch.

The events in Cary were followed by an EF Day celebration at Pinehurst Resort. Captain William Shepherd (USN, Ret) narrated a home video of his experience on the first crew to the International Space Station during dinner. Guzman Aguilar, '61, Bolivia, was also recognized in celebration of his 50th anniversary as an alumni Eisenhower Fellow. The USA Fellows held a strategic planning meeting during which there was a dynamic conversation about the future of the USA Program. They plan to follow up with subsequent meetings to involve more USA Fellows in helping to steer the USA Program. The events at Pinehurst brought together 70 Fellows and friends to celebrate the legacy of President Eisenhower's commitment to international collaboration and dialogue.

New Asia Rising: New Opportunities for Leaders in the Changing of Global Dynamics
Location: Bali, Indonesia

The Southeast Asian alumni Fellows arranged a regional conference for Eisenhower Fellows last month at the Grand Hyatt in Bali, Indonesia to celebrate EF Day. Under the direction of Rahmad Pribadi, '06, Indonesia, Yuli Ismartono, '97, chaired the Steering Committee and Natalia Soebagjo, '90, Indonesia, chaired the Organizing Committee for the event. Fellows from Malaysia and Singapore also assisted in the planning. The gathering included social events as well as workshops around regional issues, plenary sessions, and a program for Fellows' spouses. Social entrepreneurship, business, media and governance were among the themes of the events and discussions. More details: http://efasiaconference.com/.

Leadership and Innovation Conference
Location: Philadelphia, PA

More than 200 participants and guests convened in Philadelphia November 18 -19, 2010 for the Eisenhower Fellowships Leadership & Innovation Conference. Attendees included 95 Fellows from the throughout the U.S. and more than two dozen countries, as well as more than 100 spouses, Trustees, sponsors and delegates. The conference focused on the role of women as leaders and innovators in business, government, academia and the non-profit sector, the challenges they face, developing partnerships, and the importance of mentoring the next generation of leaders.

Considered by Eisenhower Fellows as a “second home,” Philadelphia (also known as “The City of Brotherly Love” and the “Birthplace of America”) was a fitting place for the group to reunite. The Philadelphia Host Committee, chaired by Sister Mary Scullion, ’02, U.S., and consisting of distinguished leaders in Philadelphia’s business and non-profit community, worked diligently with EF staff to plan a productive and entertaining conference. Throughout the conference, there were many opportunities for Fellows to network and catch up.

The conference began on Thursday with a trolley tour to see the various partnerships that Eisenhower Fellows have launched in the city, including Philadelphia Green, led by Maitreyi Roy, ’06, U.S., the Mural Arts Program, led by Jane Golden, ’03, U.S., and Project H.O.M.E. (Sister Mary Scullion). That evening, attendees gathered for a reception at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the group was addressed by Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter.

On Friday, EF Executive Committee Chair, former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, led a revealing panel with several 2010 Women’s Leadership Program Fellows whose program culminated at this conference. Governor Whitman chaired a second stimulating panel (pictured below), featuring Monica Macovei, ’97, Romania and former Minister of Justice; Jane Shaw, Chair of Intel; Suzanne McCarron, President, ExxonMobil Foundation; and Meredith Hellicar, ’93, Australia, Director, Damer Consulting to talk about their experiences with high stakes issues and crises in management.

Following a luncheon presentation by Sonal Shah, head of the White House Office of Social Innovation, Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, led a mentoring session, “Creating Opportunities for the Next Generation of Leaders.” The conference continued with a creative, interactive session led by Aaron Posner, ’03, U.S., about Innovations Through Partnerships, focusing on healthcare, arts and culture, and media and technology, and ended with a networking reception.

Eisenhower Fellows Alumnni Initiative: Pakistan Relief Project

The United Nations estimates the 2010 floods in Pakistan directly affected about 20 million people, mostly by destruction of property, livelihood and infrastructure, with a death toll of close to 2,000. The number of individuals affected by the flooding exceeds the combined total of individuals affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, in terms of people displaced, loss of homes, loss of belongings, livestock, earning sources, buildings, and schools destroyed.

After the flood disaster in Pakistan, on behalf of the Turkish EF alumni Fellows, the Turkish group coordinator and Alumni Advisory Council (AAC) member Murat Yetkin, '04, contacted the Pakistani AAC member, Sufia Shahid, '03, and EF President, John Wolf, for possible EF partnerships for relief efforts. As a result of their consultations, the Turkish Fellows contacted the Turkish Red Crescent Society (TRC), who has been actively working in Pakistan. TRC, a member of the International Red Cross, is a reliable organization with a prominent record in international relief efforts. After contacting Pakistani fellows and EF headquarters in Philadelphia, the Turkish Fellows and the TRC thought it would be useful to focus on contributing to the rehabilitation of a primary school building in the flooded regions, particularly in Nowshera.

The total project cost of rehabilitating the school is estimated at USD $24,186 (see chart below). As a start up contribution, thanks to the Turkish alumni Eisenhower Fellows’ term secretary and treasurer, Onur Karabacak, '93, the Turkish alumni Eisenhower Fellows have raised TL 10,850 (Turkish Lira), among the Fellows, which equals US $7,240. Third Annual Eisenhower Day of Fellowship

We announce some activities that occurred for the third year of our annual global celebrations commemorating what it means to be a Fellow! Click here for more details on the current EF Day.

EF Day 2010 events included:

Fellows in Brazil held a seminar on "Role of Science & Culture in the Social and Environmental Development", which was followed by their annual Brazil EF Alumni Fellows general assembly at Inhotim Institute in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais.

In Hungary, Obuda University hosted "Changes and Relationships: Eisenhower Day of Fellowship in Budapest" on the 6th of October. The planned program includde speeches by the rector of the university, Eisenhower Fellows, a representative from the US Embassy to Budapest and Huba Brückner, Director of Hungarian-American Fulbright Commission. Zsófia Cseh, MNP 2009, gave a summary of her fellowship, as well as other news.

Under the leadership of Dr. Jeffrey Koo, the Eisenhower Fellows Association in the Republic of China (Taiwan) (EFA) sponsored 40 students on a three-week long “2010 Cross–Strait Youth Leadership Camp”, August 8 through 27 in Taiwan. The curricula include Economy; Technology; Culture and Art.

Building Community Across Difference: Developing Leadership for the Next Generation
Locations: Dublin, Ireland and Belfast, Northern Ireland

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF MEETING REPORT

Introduction
Building community is slow, unglamorous, painstaking, and sometimes dangerous work. Without meaningful community, little positive gets done. Yet built authentically, community unleashes human potential and leverages the assets of organizations to address the great issues of the day. Effective community leaders- whether they serve in the public or private sector must understand the increasingly complicated interplay and societal implications of building bridges in communities divided by cultural identities and histories, frequently accompanied by violence. While there are urgent needs for leaders to develop skills that hone their capacity to think in pragmatic ways to address
difference, there are practitioners who have wide experience in the field of conflict resolution from whom they can learn. Without prior exposure to these disciplines, leaders, especially emerging leaders, are often left to invent their own solutions and grapple with everyday community challenges on their own. In response to this need, alumni and administrative staff of the Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance collaborated with their counterparts from the Eisenhower and Loeb Fellowships to sponsor a first of its kind international forum on the island of
Ireland May 4-7-2010. Despite travel delays due to volcanic ash, 11 Kellogg Fellows, 11 Eisenhower Fellows, 3 Loeb Fellows, and 1 Livingston Fellow were in attendance for the meeting, which began in Dublin and then moved to Belfast. Six young emerging community leaders from the Island of Ireland identified by the Irish Eisenhower Fellows also attended. A final program agenda and biographical sketch of the forum attendees accompany this Executive Summary.

Objectives of the Meeting
• Develop an international peer network across Fellowship programs that links practicing community leaders to others who are working to build
community across difference and strengthen civil society
• Develop a unique Global Initiative designed to:

1. Build on best practice and the experiences of communities of difference across the world
2. Enable a global audience to experience, learn and contribute to our understanding of creating sustainable communities across difference
3. Involve community leaders, academics, and researchers and the people of the communities in dialogue
4. Make use of writers, artists, poets, and their arts to promote understanding of cultural differences
5. Understand and imagine how the design of the built environment can shape new professional and cultural partnership, and create
communities that are vibrant in multiple dimension
6. Use digital media and traditional structure to develop a new model of delivery and learning on community building
7. Access the people and ideas who have made a difference and created a way of understanding and doing that can be shared
8. Capture experience and best practices and disseminate virtual resources of new models of approach to community building

Outcomes and Recommendations
1. The participants enthusiastically affirmed the sustained value of the three Fellowships working together again collaboratively on the forum topic. Future collaborative efforts must be purposeful, tangible, and realistic, with clear outcomes, and spearheaded by a small working group with representatives from all three Fellowships.
2. Collaborative methods should include invitation to each other’s meetings and programming, and perhaps start with cross–fellowship Webinars featuring prominent leaders from each Fellowship.
3. A follow-up collaborative meeting of this group in the Middle East is proposed for 2011.
4. A virtual Mentoring Institute should be created to allow young emerging leaders access to experienced Fellows from all three Fellowship programs. Such a virtual Institute creates a network outside of each participant’s own community, and can be invaluable in facilitating contacts, consultants, and experts in community building.
5. All slide presentations, pictures, videos, and a list of the last day’s Transferable Concepts of the meeting should be posted on each
Fellowship’s web site for review and use by attendees.

Next Steps
The Executive Directors of KFLA and the Eisenhower Fellowship will debrief the meeting and initiate a small working group to carry the recommendations forward.

Energy: The Challenges for Environment and Security
Location: Paris, France

Over 250 Eisenhower Fellows, spouses, Trustees, sponsors and special guests came together in Paris from September 30 though October 2 to honor the organization and initiate the newest “class” of Fellows while debating global issues of energy and climate change.

A European Operating Committee of alumni Fellows from France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Spain, the U.K., and EC led by French Fellows Claude Henrion, ’68, and Frederic Mauro, ’01, organized the 2½-day program and stocked it with stimulating speakers and picture-perfect venues that captured the beauty for which Paris is renowned. Discussions focused on energy security from both the suppliers’ and consumers’ points of view; looked at energy transportation issues; and examined the critical questions surrounding the climate change debate, including the importance of moving forward to reduce carbon emissions.

ACE Speaker Series: Developing Executive Talent
Location: Beijing, China

Eisenhower Fellowships and the Chinese Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) co-hosted this event, which featured a discussion with Eisenhower Fellows, Harvey Chang, ’01, China (Taiwan), president and CEO of Taiwan Mobile; and Chen Poujian, ’06, China, chairman and CEO of Tianan Insurance, on ways to attract, develop, and retain talented leaders in Chinese and multinational companies today. EF President John Wolf and Jiang Bo, ’99, China, secretary general of CEAIE, provided dinner remarks. The event highlight was a keynote address by Kai Fu Lee, CEO of Google China, who captivated the attendees with his speech on leadership.

A Latin American Women's Leadership Forum
Location: New York City, USA

Approximately 70 guests, including 22 Eisenhower Fellows, participated in the Latin American Women’s Leadership Forum in New York City on November 14th, which also marked the birthday of Mamie Dowd Eisenhower, Ike’s wife. The event also marked the launch of the Latin American Women's Network. Through a series of special keynote remarks, breakout sessions, and informal networking opportunities, forum participants came together to discuss how to build stronger networks for change and increase awareness of women's issues. Highlights included remarks from Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, ‘97, USA; Ines Alberdi, '98, Spain, executive director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women; EF Trustee Christie Todd Whitman, former governor of New Jersey and founder of the Whitman Strategy Group; Ana Milena Muñoz de Gaviria, founder of COLFUTURO and former first lady of Colombia; and several other outstanding women leaders.

ACE Speaker Series: Youth - New Scenarios to Cope With Violence, Technology, Education and the New Codes
Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina

USA Fellows Tony Habit, '00, and Andrea Cabral, '07, were guest speakers at the fifth annual Jornadas Conference, organized by ICANA and the Eisenhower Fellows of Argentina, and sponsored by the ACE INA Foundation. Discussing topics of youth, Habit and Cabral were joined by Argentina Fellows Enrique Pinedo, '57; Julio Alvarez, '60; Alberto Mondet, '65; Alberto Gabrielli, '69; Ignacio Braun Cantilo, '79; Marita Carballo, '88; Felipe Noguera, '88; Marta Pascual, ‘88; Monica Gonzalez de Bordon, '97; Silvia Bacher, '01; and Carlos Regazzoni, '04, in addition to nearly 150 other participants. The Argentine American Seminar was created several years ago as a space to debate ideas and exchange knowledge about different subjects in order to foster a better understanding among the people of Argentina, the United States, and other countries. U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne opened the seminar thanking ICANA and EF for establishing this important space for dialogue.

Asia: Connect for a Better World
Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

This important regional conference brought together 35 Eisenhower Fellows from 22 countries, and other high-level participants from around South East Asia, for stimulating discussions around current economic issues such as the inter-connected regional and global economy, human capital migration, emerging Asian nations, and sustainable development. Conference speakers included the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak; Indonesian Minister of Trade and Eisenhower Fellow Mari Pangestu; Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin; President of the Malaysian Eisenhower Fellowships Association Tan Sri Dato Mohmd Ramli Kushairi; Boeing Southeast Asia CEO Ralph “Skip” Boyce; and Hong Kong businessman Ronnie Chan. To mark the inaugural Eisenhower Day of Fellowship, a dinner was held at the Putrajaya Club and a slide show of the EF Day of Fellowship celebrations around the world was shown. Malaysia’s first Eisenhower Fellow, Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid Ismail, better known as Coco Majid, spoke of his Fellowship experience in 1963.

Leadership for Development and Sustainable Growth: Facing the Challenges in Latin America
Location: Ouro Preto, Brazil

More than 110 attendees, including 50 Fellows, gathered in the historic colonial town of Ouro Preto for three days to debate the future development of Latin America. Conference participants shared experiences and presented best practices in the areas of health, entrepreneurship, the environment, nonprofit management and sustainable development. Conference speakers included the former president of Embraer, Ozires Silva; Peruvian journalist Rosa Maria Palácios, ’01; the president of Women’s World Banking, Mary Ellen Iskenderian; a representative of the Argentine National Congress, Estebán Bullrich, ‘07; the Mayor of Ouro Preto, Angelo Oswaldo; and the president of Hemominas Foundation, Anna Bárbara Proietti, '00, among others. The conference also kicked off Eisenhower Fellowships' 2008 Latin America Regional Program, which brought 21 emerging leaders from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay to the United States in September 2008.

Strengthening Global Cities: An Urban Leadership Forum
Location: City College of New York, New York City, USA

Fifty Eisenhower Fellows from 17 different countries joined more than 100 other participants at the Powell Center for Policy Studies to share ideas and experiences on urban leadership. Led by EF Chairman Gen. Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.), the day featured keynote addresses by Deputy Mayor of New York Daniel Doctoroff, Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons, and General Powell himself. Powell also led a highly interactive town-hall style meeting on urban lessons for the future with CIP Fellows Alicia Guajardo (Mexico), Arbind Singh (India), and Don Hobart (USA), and several CCNY Scholars.

21st Century Cities
Location: Dublin, Ireland

Nearly 140 participants experienced Dublin as a leading global city as the Irish Eisenhower Fellows played host to a regional conference on “21st Century Cities.” Key guests and speakers included Bertie Ahern Taoisearch, the Irish Prime Minister; Alfonso Vegara, ’87, Spain, EF Trustee and Fundacion Metropoli president; and Martin Curley, director of IT innovation at Intel. Attendees also enjoyed visits to Intel’s Innovation Center, the Guinness Storehouse, and the Royal Hospital at Kilmainham. The conference also served as an inaugural event for 26 Fellows from 13 countries around the globe who subsequently participated in the fall 2007 program on Challenges of Urbanization, EF’s first theme-based or Common Interest Program.
